Emily Tran 10 Best

  1. If photo number 7 had slightly deeper blacks, it would be absolutely perfect. I noticed its the only figural image out of your posts this week, but your use of shadow successfully endowed the photo with the same air of intrigue, the same magnetism of your object/location images. The fact that the man/boy's face is obscured gives him a shape-shifting, Nightcrawler-esque aura. I feel like I'm watching an intro to an episode of Criminal Minds!

  2. You have managed to find some really beautiful shapes here. I can see you have a very artistic eye to find such beauty in a staircase, stepping stones, a bitten ice cream cone, ect. So that's very enjoyable. At the same time, in your last half there is more of a mysterious quality. I could see you pushing this further and showing more of those odd bits of the pleasant. As in the feet on the stones or the bite in the cone. Just that touch of intrigue adds a lot I think.

  3. My favorite picture is the sewer drain, the composition and angle works really well. The details captured in the first two photos are also very nice.

  4. Except for the last two photographs, your pictures are very much in the mid tonal range and don't have a lot of contrast between lights and darks. I definitely agree that the 7th picture should have deeper blacks; it would really improve the image. My favorites are 7 and 9 because of the mystery they pose. Picture number 6 is also extremely nice, the opposing sharp edges of the stones and the smoothness of the rocks is such a nice balance. I just wish the cracks between the rocks would be more prominent to really make them pop out.

  5. I've noticed through a lot of your work that you are very interested in reflections (possible project theme? :-) ) and I find these photos the most interesting to look at. The glass-like reflections in the second photo are almost mesmerizing and the reflection of the figure in the glass in the second to last image creates a ghostly, magical feel. Keep up the great work!
