I really appreciate the spy-like quality of all the photos, and the oblivious subjects. The perspective is sneaky and intriguing. Photo 10 especially appealed to me because I read it as you documenting the man observing the woman, so two layers of scrutiny. The fact that the only legible word in the image is "Joe" further conveys deception. "Joe" could reference John Doe, an alias, an assumed name, the name of a police suspect. Overall, I just got the beginning of a crime novel/movie vibe.
All the photos as a set really work well with and fit your theme of spy like and creepy scenes. The fourth photo has a certain quality you get in a calm scene in a horror movie, before something really awful happens. The eighth photo catches my eye, the geometric patterns make the photo really interesting. I like how the little becomes the center of focus due to the choice to crop out the adult. The ninth photo displays really neat conceptual and tonal contrasts. The girl on the right has lighter hair, while the one on the left has darker hair, and the nature vs. man made contrast with the tree and building also on either side of the pole is neat. The severe angles and tilting in most of these photos add more of a mysterious quality.
Your method of photographing your subjects intrigues me, the vantage points experiment with a whole different way of observing them, in some cases, as if through the eyes of a small child. There is a strong sense of wandering from the perspective of the photographer (you) that immerses the viewers into the same environment. The fourth photograph indicates that the people felt virtuality no intrusive acts toward them which helped you produced an genuine photography.
You have a great eye for repetition in some of these photos- particularly the first one, the sixth one and the eighth one. I find these images to particularly successful because they lead your eye through the image well. Your images also all seem to tell a story- one that is eerie and almost voyeuristic. They are very intriguing- keep up the good work !
I find the majority of your pieces really go well together and a specific theme. The only one I feel is kind of an odd-ball out is the third image. The focus, it seems, is on the upper texture of the wall, which makes the picture somewhat confusing to look at; however, I find the picture to be rather innovative and thoughtful, and it is clear you are taking risks!
The fourth picture is so awesome! I just wish there would be a sharp focus on something. These definitely give that creepy "I probably shouldn't be stalking these people" feeling. I really love the third image because of the texture and pattern on the wall as well as the way you cropped part of the guy's head. It gave me the sensation of scrambling around with the camera trying to not be obvious that you're taking his picture. Composition wise, these are actually really great with your theme. When it comes to the technical stuff, watch the way you're editing your photos because some have gray where it really should be white. I love the repetition that's constant throughout the photos.
I like that your images aren't straightened out because it goes with your theme. It's like you are on that show cheaters and bringing back evidence to the concerned bf/gf. You images have great contrast and detail to them

ReplyDeleteThese fit your theme really well. My favorite is the 6th photo of the boy in the store, the contrast is great and the perspective is interesting.
